Chicago Green Homes Program

The City of Chicago now offers a voluntary certification program for homeowners, residential builders, and developers looking to incorporate sustainable design into their residential building. Certification is granted by the Chicago Green Homes Program (CGHP), which uses a point-based system to certify homes according to a 3-star rating scale. Homeowners can choose from various point categories to incorporate into their project, including sustainable sites, energy efficiency, materials, health and safety, resource conservation, homeowner education, and innovation.

The goals of the CGHP program are to:

  • Provide greater energy efficiency
  • Provide healthier indoor air
  • Reduce water usage
  • Preserve natural resources
  • Improve durability and reduce maintenance
  • Reduce waste and pollution
  •

There are additional benefits for incorporating sustainable design into your building. These benefits include cost savings associated with the green permitting process, access to green industry professionals that can provide expert advice, support and feedback given by CGHP, and community recognition for sustainable leadership.

    Eco-Andersonville: Sustainable Community

Andersonville, a unique Chicago neighborhood with a small-town feel, has recently launched the Eco-Andersonville Sustainable Business Certification Program. The program certifies small, local businesses as sustainable and provides them with a rigorous checklist of requirements, guidelines, resources and incentives to adopt sustainable business practices and let their customers know that they care about the planet. The checklist was adapted from best practices of national green business programs, but was tailored to apply to small, locally owned, independent businesses, by a committee of local constituents and sustainability experts from local universities and non-profits.

Other Eco-Andersonville programs and events encourage environmental, economic, and social sustainability. These programs include the first on-street recycling program in Chicago, energy audits, eco-programming at the Andersonville Farmers Market,  commercial district composting, recycling advocacy, and more.

Andersonville’s next large event is Green Week, a week-long celebration of sustainability with green activities, events, and workshops for businesses and residents. Andersonville Green Week runs from July 12 through 18.
